Stray is an adventure game where you play as a stray cat in a decaying cybercity, separated from your family. After falling into a walled city inhabited by sentient robots and dangerous creatures, you team up with a drone named B-12 to find your way back to the surface and uncover the mysteries of this post-apocalyptic world. Midtown is a striking contrast to the earlier, grungier areas of the city. Located on the upper level, it's a district illuminated by vibrant neon lights, filled with bustling businesses and entertainment venues. However, this modern façade masks a chilling reality: Midtown is a police state, under the iron grip of surveillance drones called Sentinels and robotic officers known as Peacemakers. Life here is strictly controlled, with robots facing harsh punishments for minor offenses, living in fear of arrest and a terrifying process called "rebooting." This oppressive atmosphere permeates every street and alley. The player, as the cat, arrives in Midtown via an abandoned subway station, a vital link to the previous area. The main objective is to locate Clementine, a rebellious robot who wants to reach the Outside. This involves navigating the heavily guarded streets, solving environmental puzzles to access hidden areas like Clementine's apartment, and ultimately infiltrating the Neco Corporation factory to retrieve a crucial atomic battery needed to power the subway line. This factory, ironically, is the source of the city's dreaded Zurks. Stealth is essential within the factory, as patrolling Sentinels pose a significant threat. Midtown also features other notable locations like a bar and a nightclub, which become accessible later and require clever interaction with the environment and other robots to progress. Throughout the area, collectible memories for B-12 and various badges offer deeper insight into the city's history and offer rewards for exploration. Midtown serves as the final major hub, escalating the challenge and bringing together narrative threads before the cat and B-12 journey towards the game's climax, seeking the elusive Outside.
