Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Description
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a captivating turn-based RPG set in a Belle Époque-inspired world, where a grim annual event, the "Gommage," sees a mysterious entity called the Paintress erase people of a specific age. Players lead Expedition 33, a desperate mission to stop the Paintress before she erases everyone aged "33." The game blends traditional JRPG mechanics with real-time elements, offering dynamic combat and deep character customization.
One of the earliest and most intricate areas encountered is the Ancient Sanctuary, a crucial part of Act I. Players, controlling Gustave, Lune, and Maelle, enter this region after navigating the Flying Waters, guided by its distinctive red and white flora. The primary objective is to locate the Gestral Village to find a way to cross the sea.
Upon entering, an Expedition 63 Flag offers a resting point. The Ancient Sanctuary introduces new challenges, such as the evasive Pétank, a spherical enemy that must be cornered into a blue swirl before combat, yielding valuable upgrade materials upon defeat. Exploration reveals numerous "Pictos" – ancient engravings providing skills or buffs – like the Energising Jump and Burning Mark. The path also introduces the faceless Young Boy and leads to a confrontation with a Robust Sakapatate, a large Gestral defensive contraption weak to fire, which rewards Gustave with the Sakaram weapon.
The Sanctuary Maze, a complex network of side paths, is a significant part of the area. It’s here that players encounter the Ranger and Catapult Sakapatates, with the latter potentially dropping Lune’s Trebuchim weapon. Hidden nooks within the maze conceal further Pictos like Attack Lifesteal and Energising Start II, along with valuable Colours of Lumina and Revive Tint Shards. An optional Mime boss fight offers Lune a new outfit.
A notable collectible is the Ancient Sanctuary’s Paint Cage, whose three locks can be shot from a distance near Expedition Journal 63. Reaching the opened cage involves a secluded northern path with golden ropes and a short platforming section, leading to a Chroma Elixir Shard.
The journey culminates in Giant Bell Alley, leading to a boss battle against the Ultimate Sakapatate, a formidable foe weak to fire. Defeating it rewards the Breaker Pictos and other materials. The giant bell itself, a gift from the Grandis to the Gestrals, was used to make nevrons flee. After completing objectives and collecting all items, players exit the Ancient Sanctuary, proceeding towards the Gestral Village to continue their expedition. The Ancient Sanctuary serves as an excellent early example of the game’s blend of exploration, challenging combat, and rich world-building.
