NEKOPARA Vol. 2

Sekai Project, NEKO WORKs, [note 1] (2016)

Description

NEKOPARA Vol. 2, developed by NEKO WORKs and published by Sekai Project, was released on Steam on February 19, 2016. As the third installment in the popular visual novel series, it continues the story of Kashou Minaduki, a young pastry chef, and his life at his patisserie, "La Soleil," alongside a charming group of catgirls. While the first volume focused on the cheerful and inseparable duo of Chocola and Vanilla, this volume shifts its narrative lens to explore the dynamic and often tumultuous relationship between two other catgirl sisters: the fiery, tsundere eldest, Azuki, and the tall, clumsy, yet gentle youngest, Coconut. The central plot of NEKOPARA Vol. 2 revolves around the personal growth of Azuki and Coconut and the mending of their strained sisterly bond. The story opens with "La Soleil" bustling with business, thanks in no small part to the adorable catgirl waitresses. However, beneath the surface of this idyllic setting, tensions simmer between Azuki and Coconut. Azuki, despite being the oldest, has a small stature and a sharp tongue, which she often uses to mask her insecurities and her genuine care for her siblings. In contrast, Coconut is physically imposing but possesses a gentle and somewhat timid nature, often feeling inadequate due to her clumsiness. Their conflicting personalities lead to frequent arguments and misunderstandings, creating a central conflict that drives the narrative forward. The game delves into the individual struggles of these two catgirls. Azuki takes on a managerial role in the patisserie but her harsh and critical approach, intended as a form of tough love, only serves to alienate the sensitive Coconut. Coconut, on the other hand, grapples with feelings of uselessness and a desire to be seen as cute and feminine rather than just "cool" and capable. The story reaches a poignant climax when a heated argument leads to Coconut running away from home, forcing both sisters and Kashou to confront their feelings and misunderstandings head-on. Through Kashou's patient guidance and their own introspection, Azuki and Coconut begin to understand each other's perspectives, leading to a heartfelt reconciliation and a strengthening of their familial ties. As a kinetic visual novel, NEKOPARA Vol. 2 features a linear storyline with no player choices, focusing entirely on delivering a cohesive narrative experience. The gameplay primarily consists of reading through dialogue and watching the story unfold. A notable feature is the "petting" mechanic, where players can interact with the characters on screen by "petting" them with the mouse cursor, eliciting cute reactions and purrs. The game utilizes the E-mote system, which brings the 2D character sprites to life with fluid animations and a wide range of facial expressions, enhancing the emotional impact of the story. The visual presentation of NEKOPARA Vol. 2 is a significant highlight, featuring vibrant and detailed artwork by the artist Sayori. The character designs are moe-inspired, emphasizing cuteness and charm. While many of the background assets are reused from the previous installment, the new character-focused computer graphics (CGs) are of high quality. The soundtrack, while also recycling some tracks, introduces new opening and ending theme songs that are upbeat and memorable. The game is fully voiced in Japanese, with the voice actresses delivering energetic performances that effectively convey the characters' personalities. It is important to note that NEKOPARA Vol. 2 was released in two versions: an all-ages version available on Steam and an adult 18+ version. The Steam version, while containing suggestive themes and dialogue, does not feature explicit content. The adult version includes explicit scenes of a sexual nature. In the all-ages version, these scenes are either removed or fade to black, though the narrative context remains, making it clear that intimate events have occurred. Overall, NEKOPARA Vol. 2 was well-received by fans of the series and the visual novel genre. Reviewers praised its charming characters, high-quality artwork, and the heartfelt story centered on Azuki and Coconut's relationship. While some critics pointed to the predictable plot and reused assets as minor drawbacks, the game was largely seen as a successful continuation of the NEKOPARA saga, offering a sweet and entertaining experience.
